Get excited for our Elective Workshops

There will be two elective workshop opportunities at The Gathering Conference, to be equipped by passionate experts in their field. Below is the description of one of our workshops:

"Good Work! Finding and flourishing in all the assignments of life. In this workshop we will briefly explore the theological foundations for work as a disciples and consider: how we discern specific roles and assignments throughout life, and consider our work as ministry, and the ways in which disciples work distinctively."

This workshop will be presented by Rev. Scott Morrison (former senior pastor of Georges River Life Church, who completed his doctoral thesis on this topic).

Transformation Story!

from Meg Salan (one of our NVBC young adults)

A few sermons ago Travis preached on the subject of “cultivating our feed”, Travis exposed the importance of guarding our hearts on the exposure of our screens and how the “devil doesn’t need to destroy you… he just needs to distract you.”

ree

Being born in 2005 I’ve always been exposed to a screen, my schooling was heavily based on my IPad as well as my entertainment; therefore I’ve grown into the habit of picking up a device whenever it was available (which is all of the time). This negative habit has increased drastically over my teenage years, this has resulted in me spending most of my free time scrolling on social media and procrastinating anything and everything. I’ve always been aware that my obsession with a screen (particularly social media) was something I needed to gain control over, however I never wanted to put the time or effort into changing my ways.

This was until Travis exposed that the “Devil doesn’t need to destroy you. He needs to distract you.” During those words I felt a wave of conviction wash over me. I then (ironically) picked up my phone to look at my weekly screen time, on Instagram and TikTok.. I had spent 20 hours mindlessly scrolling just in one week... This hit me like a ton of bricks. I’ve always complained that I “never had enough time for God”, how “I don’t have time to read the Bible” or “that my life was way too busy to just sit and be with God”, but in the moment I realised I had more than enough time for God. I just wasn’t using it.

From that moment I knew I needed to change. God had given up so much for me, so surely I can give up time for him. As I put down my phone I felt a push from God to delete TikTok, as I stared at my phone sitting on the floor the excuses started to roll in; “what if I need to contact one of my friends through TikTok?” “I’ll miss out on all of the new videos from content creators” or worst of all “I am going to miss out”. As I debated these thoughts in my head I felt an even stronger push from God to get rid of TikTok. That extra nudge from God drowned out the thoughts and I deleted the app.

From that Sunday I have reduced my social media time drastically. I went from 20 hours a week to only 58 minutes. This time difference has already had a positive impact. I now dedicate more time for God, as I’ve made a habit of reading my Bible every morning during breakfast. This has helped me grow closer to God. On top of this my sleep schedule has improved, I am no longer staying up until the early hours of the morning on social media; as well as staying in bed for hours ‘doom scrolling’ in the morning. I’ve also found the time to do activities that I enjoy like reading, as I previously procrastinated things I like doing. My attention span has increased as I can now message someone and wait for their response rather than quickly flipping to Instagram.

Overall cultivating my feed hasn’t been easy, I’ve definitely thought of going back onto social media and scrolling again to get that quick serotonin boost. However I knew that it was in my best interest that I needed to cut it out. I am still improving on my screen time as it has partially been redirected to other apps (which are an improvement to TikTok and Instagram) yet are still somewhat distracting me.

In summary, if you are thinking of cutting down your screen time I really urge you to do it. It has been a journey (that I am still traveling) but in these short few weeks I have already noticed an improvement!

We highly encourage you to join Meg on such a journey!

From Rebecca Malietoa

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all those who have reached out with so much love and support since Pale‘s passing. The kids and I are truly humbled and overwhelmed, and filled with a sense of peace and joy seeing just how many lives have been touched in some way by the person he was.

His funeral will be held on Monday 15th September:

11am - 12pm at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish (6 Kerrinea Rd, Sefton)

1 - 2pm at Rookwood Cemetery (exact location tba), followed by a wake from 2pm.

Times are strict so humbly ask that you allow time for driving and parking etc. In true Pale fashion we will be starting and finishing on time without delay.

Lots of love from Rebecca, Izaiah, Azalea, Malakai and Ezekiel.
