This week we are begin a new series of bible studies on the Holy Spirit.

Watch the Bible Project video on the Holy Spirit

  • What stood out to you in the video?

  • Did you learn anything new?

We're going to begin in Genesis. Read the following five short passages from Genesis:

1:1-2; 1:26-29; 2:8-15; 3:8-10; 3:17-24

  • How would you describe the relationship between God and his people in the garden of Eden?

  • How does the banishment of Adam and Eve from the Garden help us to understand the importance of 'presence' to God?

Throughout the Old Testament, God's Spirit continues to be present, especially in the Temple (and Tabernacle). God's Spirit also dwells in God's prophets. But there is a future hope that begins to develop about the Holy Spirit. Read the following three short passages from the prophets:

Isaiah 44:1-5

Ezekiel 36:22-28

Joel 2:28-32

  • How do these promises relate to the problem of sin (as we just explored in Genesis)?

  • How do we experience the fulfilment of these promises?

  • Have you had experiences of the Holy Spirit's activity in your life that particularly come to mind as you read these prophesies?

Let's jump forward to the New Testament. Read the following four short passages:

John 14:16-20

Mark 15:38

Hebrews 10:19-22

Ephesians 2:17-22

  • How would you describe the relationship between God and his people through the Spirt as poured out on us by Jesus?

  • How do these passages relate to the passages we've already read?

  • Have you had experiences of the Holy Spirit's activity in your life that particularly come to mind as you read these prophesies?

Pray for one another, inviting the Holy Spirit to be present and at work in your lives.
