John 14:15-31; 15:26-16:15
What are your thoughts/reflections from last Sunday's sermon and bible study on 'A Movement in Jesus' Name'?
Do you have any stories from the last week about praying and acting in Jesus' name?
Read John 14:15-31
In verse 15, how does love and obedience connect to the giving of the Holy Spirit? Does this mean the Spirit is only given to those who deserve Him?
Jesus promises the Spirit to be given as another 'advocate' / 'helper' / 'counsellor' / 'comforter' - the hard-to-translate word parakletos - in this context it means, "one called or sent for to assist another; an advocate, one who pleads the cause of another...whose influence and operation were to compensate for the departure of Christ himself" (Mounce Greek Dictionary)
In what ways have you experienced the Holy Spirit as your parakletos? Share with one another how He has...
Helped you?
Comforted you?
Guided you?
Assured you of your salvation?
Taught you/reminded you?
Given you peace?
Look at Jesus' explanation of why he is telling his disciples what's going to happen next (vv28-13):
How does Jesus telling them help them believe?
How does the work of the 'prince of this world' show the world that Jesus loves and obeys the Father?
Read John 15:26-16:15
What do you notice in these words - how does Jesus expand on what He said earlier about the Spirit?
What do you think He means, when he says the Spirit testifies about Jesus?
How does this relate to vv8-11?
How does our testimony about Jesus relate to the testimony of the Spirit?
How does the Holy Spirit help us to Pray, Serve & Reach as God's people?
Share the ways in which you want the Spirit to help, guide, teach, etc. as you seek to grow in these things this year.
Pray for one another into the things you've shared.
