Exodus 35-39

Hebrews 9:1-15; 10:19-25

A significant part of the covenant laws at Sinai were about the Tabernacle - a tent used for worshipping God as His people moved around in the wilderness.

Read Exodus 35:4-29

  • God instructed Moses to take up a collection of precious materials to construct the Tabernacle. What do you notice about the description of this here in Exodus 35 (especially considering this is immediately after the incident with the golden calf)? What does this show us about worshipping the Lord?

The description of the tabernacle continues for many chapters - too many to read in this bible study. But the writer of Hebrews gives a helpful summary, and makes some interesting points about the way we should understand the Tabernacle under the New Covenant...

Read Hebrews 9:1-15

  • According to the writer of Hebrews, why was the tabernacle set up as it was in Exodus?

  • What do you imagine it was like for the Israelites to worship God in this way?

  • According to the writer of Hebrews, what was lacking in tabernacle worship, that needed Jesus as the mediator of a new covenant?

  • How does Jesus' blood "cleanse our consciences"? What do you think that means?

  • What (if anything) can the Old Covenant worship in the Tabernacle teach us about New Covenant worship?

Read Hebrews 10:19-25

  • How do these words help us to consider how we worship God under the New Covenant?

  • What can we do together as God's people this week to do these things?
